Self Pity

"Self-pity is our worst enemy and if we yield to it, we can never do anything wise in this world."
- Helen Keller

We all do it from time to time.  I've been feeling very sorry for myself for the past three days as I am suffering with a flu bug, and I'm on my own...Mr Ayak having left for Istanbul to work until March.  You know what it's like?  You're feeling very ill and there's no-one around to sympathise, to  make you hot soup, to tuck you up in bed.  So the self-pity sets in...the poor me syndrome.

There's a sure way to put a stop to it.  Just look around you...look at the news to see how people in this world are REALLY suffering...it puts the flu bug firmly into perspective.

Maggie May, one of my followers, and someone who's blog I really enjoy, was diagnosed with cancer yesterday...and the news hit me in the face with a jolt.  She really has something to feel sorry about, but I'm getting the impression that she has a strong fighting spirit which will see her through this difficult time.

My thoughts and love are with her today...and not with myself...some things are far more important than wallowing in self-pity.

  1. You're so right....your own flu or other problems just fades into the background faced with someone else's misfortune.
Hope for the best for Maggie...

  2. It isn't easy being on your own.
Don't feel guilty about the way you feel. It has to come out and blogging is an ideal way.

Thank you for mentioning me, Ayak. I was very touched by that and i am getting over the shock now so don't worry about me.
Hope to blog something more positive in a day or so.

  3. Hi Ayak, sorry to learn you're not feeling well, you must be so lonely right now, missing Billy, your daughter and Mr. Ayak too. Thinking of you a lot right now.

Incidentally, I'm shocked about Maggie May! I'm a follower of hers. I'm going over there right now!

    Catch you later.

  5. Quite right, no reason to feel bad about yourself, it's bad enough feeling cranky and being by yourself to load self loathing on yourself too. I'll tell you my anti-flu recipe: You make yourself hot whisky out of a double whisky, a spoonful of sugar, a slice of lemon with 5 cloves stuck through it topped up with boiling water and you retreat to a 4-poster bed. Repeat procedure until you see 8 post around you and you are cured (or at least you won't care any more ;-)). Sorry to hear about your friend though. I'll pop over to her blog when I get a mo.

  7. We all wallow in self pity sometimes Ayak, tis a natural thing to do, after all if we walked about every day being all happy clappy, then the men in white coats would be coming to take us away.

I am so sorry to hear about Maggie May, I hope all goes well for her.

  8. Heiko...I've tried your remedy but I don't like whisky so have substituted brandy...oh and I don't have any cloves but have added honey...so actually it's not your remedy but mine! And I don't have a four poster bed just a normal one...but I've slept a lot today...so something's working.

Stephen...Thank you and welcome to my blog.

Ann Thankyou for being kind as usual. Yes I'm hoping for a good outcome for Maggie.

  9. Airplane cold. They're insidious. I am SO sorry you got it and I am really sorry it comes on the heels of feeling down and alone.

The good news about having a cold when no one is around is you don't have to get up to take care of anyone but yourself (well, and the dogs- but they are very understanding.)

    Get well soon!

Good wishes and strong thoughts go out to Maggie May!
