Aaargh!!

I shouldn't be blogging at this time.  It's nearly 1am and I'm really tired.  But there's a bloody mosquito in the room and I can't find it.  Don't you just hate it when that happens?

I sprayed the room an hour before I went to bed.  There's a mosquito screen on the window, and I have two plug-in repellents.

I switch off the light and settle down to sleep...and. bzzzzzzzzzzzz...it buzzes around my head...causing me to wave my hand around frantically and hit myself in the face.   I leap up and switch the light on and search the room from top to bottom...no sign of it.

Off goes the light and 5 minutes later there's a repeat performance...and another...and another.  This has been going on for over an hour and I know I won't sleep until I find it...even if it takes me all night.

So I'm sitting here at the laptop thinking it will lull the mozzie into a false sense of security.  I'm pretending to completely concentrate on typing, but I'm sneakily glancing around in the hope that it will come out of hiding when it thinks I'm not looking.

I HATE MOSQUİTOES!!!

  1. Oh yes!
    If I think I've heard one at night I can't sleep...horrible things.
Bats, on the other hand, I don't mind at all.

  3. I am used to the tiger mosquitoes in the US and I can tell you that the worst thing about these puny Turkish "skeeters" is the way they wait til you are half asleep and then make a landing zone around your ears. This is especially a problem right before sunrise.
For me, the bites rarely itch after about an hour but in the US, they can raise a whelp the size of a tumor (actually a pimple) and drive a person half mad scratching.
Since annoyance, therefore, seems to be the major problem, my solution in the past was to buy a good set of earplugs. I found these globular wax earplugs that you shape to fit and it works fine.

After I am fully plugged, I set the fan on me and let them feast. Sounds crazy perhaps but it surely beats chasing the pesky creatures in the wee hours of the morning. By the way, this is also my shameful solution to the early morning call for prayer!

  5. Being on top of a hill with an almost constant breeze, we thankfully hardly get any at all at home, but when they the odd one does sneek in somehow, it ruins your night. As Nomad said it's more the buzzing noise that is the nuiscance rather than the bite that will only itch for an hour or so, so earplugs does sound a good solution. Must try that.

  6. ACK! That is the absolute worst! I can't stand the sound of a mosquito - day or night. Did you get him in the end? Hope so! - Erin

  7. Thanks for your comments everyone. Good idea re the earplugs. However I do react badly to bites sometimes. It's got better over the years but occasionally I get a really nasty one and they sometimes become infected.

I didn't catch the blighter...I eventually fell asleep...and he got me on the arm...not too bad a bite this time though.

  10. A suggestion for the itchy bites
You can buy sore throat spray- or for major itching, you can try Oral Gel ( the stuff for cold sores and baby gums)
Put a bit on a cotton swab and the itching will go away immediately. You can use again this when it returns It is much healthier than risking infection from the germs under your fingernails.
I am not a doctor but it worked for me.

  17. I am so with you on the whole hatred of mosquito's!! I lost count of the amount of times I went through that exact same thing when we lived in Thailand.....worse when I didn't know there was one in there till I woke in the morning and you could play join the dots with my bites!

Hope you managed to swat the wee blighter!
