Earthquake in Turkey today

Today we have news of a major earthquake in Van in the east of Turkey.  The latest news reports up to 1000 fatalities.

My heart goes out to the people of Van tonight.  This is such a tragedy.  The worst earthquake here for a decade.

Some of my blogging friends in Turkey have already posted about this, but Karen at Being Koy has repeated some information she first circulated in 2006 about being prepared for earthquakes.  It's great advice...please read if you live in a country such as ours which is always at risk from earthquakes.

  1. Tragic news with so many lives lost. My heartfelt sympathy for all those who died and their relatives and for the nation.

There seems an unusual number of earthquakes recently from all round the world. Makes one wonder.

    Very best wishes ~ Eddie

PS I am going to ressurect the Sunday Roast fairly soon. I have some helpers which makes a difference because the column was becoming too big for one person to manage.

  2. While I am extremely sorry for the people in the Van area, I wasn't sure how far it was from you and was hoping you would be OK.
Glad to hear you are and hope that help comes to the others.

Nomatter how much help gets there and how quickly, the consequences are not just immediate but long term.

  4. Ayak, I've just read about this on the BBC website and came straight to Blogger to see if you'd posted. Earthquakes are so terrifying, even to the outsider and my heart goes out to all those involved in any way.

  5. Thanks for the link Ayak. It's always scary when you're over here and the news report "earthquake in Turkey" and it takes ages for them to specify *where* exactly. Hope this was an isolated incident and there are no further earthquakes coming!

  6. Thanks for the link...I'll send it to my in/laws. Just horrible what happened there.
Most of all I'm glad you are okay.
My husband's family lives mostly in Izmir so they were okay this time.
My husband's nephew was stationed there in the Military but last month he was transfered elsewhere so he was lucky.

Take care and have a great day! Has Mr. A finished his brick/work.

  7. Glad to hear that you, and Karen, are OK but it's a very sad situation for the people of Van. A much worse quake than the one that hit Lorca here in Spain a few months ago and yet the people there are still struggling to get back to normal. It's going to take a long time. Our thoughts with rescuers, survivors and the bereaved.
    Axx

  8. Thankyou all for your kind comments. It's an awful tragedy. One that will take the people of Van a long time to recover from.

  9. PS to Eddie: I'm delighted the Sunday Roast will start to make an appearance again. I should look at my interview again to see if it needs updating. Let me know if and when you want it xx
