All about cookies

No...not the ones we eat.  I'm talking about the cookies that track your movements on the internet, and the reason why we get so much spam and pop-up adverts while we are browsing.

I read THIS ARTİCLE İN THE GUARDİAN the other day and those of you in the UK will be pleased to know that there is new legislation afoot to reduce the amount of tracking by advertisers.

At the time I was reading the article, I didn't give it much thought.  But yesterday I was having an email conversation with a friend and cigars were mentioned.

Sure enough, a spam email trying to sell me cigars, appeared in my Junk file this morning.

Quite worrying isn't it?  Nothing is private anymore.

  1. Good grief!
Big Brother is closer than we think...and how appalling if this is used to track people's thoughts in a more and more authoritarian world society.

    1. What bothered me Fly was that it was just too much of a coincidence to get the cigar email this morning. I was aware that we are tracked when we are browsing but always assumed emails were private.

    2. Yes, I had too. Clearly I was wrong.
I'll be getting ads for weapons of mass destruction next if my e mails are being spied on....

    3. Fly, I hate the thought that we have to think twice about what we write.I wonder how many sites are tracking our blogs.

  2. just a little scary eh ? What frightens me is that the adverts that seem to pop up for me are all for weight loss and improving sagging skin....how do they know ? J.

    1. Ah yes Janice, I get a lot of those too. It almost feels like someone is watching us from inside the pc screen!

I'm also a little bemused by how many spam emails I get for viagra!

  3. cookies have been an issue since way back in the dark ages when I first got on the 'net! I understand (in some instances) why they're used...but still it makes me uneasy having all that stuff messing around in my computer!

    1. Hi Theanne. Yes I have been aware of them for some time but until I read the article I hadn't really given them much thought. It does make me feel a bit uneasy.

  4. My malware searcher and antivirus should be clearing out tracking cookies but my facebook adverts really have me scratching my head in wonder. I don't want to learn Yiddish, I am not jewish, and I really really don't ever look at plastic surgery sites!

    1. Hi Kv. I agree about Facebook ads. Totally inappropriate...almost like they are aimed at someone else rather than me. What I don't get is why I get all these ads in Turkish, when my page is in English. Of course I realise it must have something to do with my being located in Turkey, but surely ads would be in the language you use?

  5. I have had a spate of over 50's dating site adverts popping up on my pages. The hubby will be wondering what's going on.
