Ants in November?

What's that all about?   They should be long gone by now.

Surprisingly, there weren't so many ants in the house this summer...far less than usual.  It seems that they were just hiding and waiting, and when the sun came out today..so did the ants.

Yesterday I made a chocolate cake and put it in an airtight cake box on a side table in the kitchen.  Next to it was an airtight tin full of biscuits.  I opened the cake box half an hour ago and there were these tiny ants crawling all over the cake.  I checked the biscuit tin and found the same.

I suppose I could have brushed them off and kept the cake and biscuits, but I just didn't fancy them, so they went in the bin.  What a waste.

So I have been all over the kitchen with the ant spray and hope that they have disappeared.  I never thought I'd say it, but roll on colder weather so we can say goodbye and good riddance to creepy crawlies for a few months.

  1. I've had all your ants and everyone else's over the summer and noticed a week gfo that they'd all gone - obviously made their way back to you.

  2. That does seem very late, Ayak, but with your unusually warm temperatures I guess it shouldn't be too surprising.

Despite the cool weather, we got ants in the kitchen in France for the very first time this summer. I was making jam and it boiled over and the sugary smell brought them running! Thankfully, once it was all cleared up they disappeared again. I would not want to find them in my cake tin!

    1. It was a very unpleasant surprise Perpetua. They are very small ants but I'm still amnazed at how they managed to get into the tins.

  3. We have a regular ant invasion in the shower...one corner is black with them. But they go as suddenly as they arrived. I'm sure they are getting in via the roof...but no one wants to go and look!
We occasionally have what are called 'cleaner' ants....they arrive in line and go through the house from back to front. They are supposed to eat everything in their path- which might explain why we don't have many creep crawlies.

    1. Those cleaner ants sound quite useful Fly. Like mini vacuum cleaners!

I'm not sure where ours are getting in, but I've now sprayed along the outside walls as well, so hopefully they'll stay away. They don't bother me too much, but hate it when they get into food.

  4. Ants!!!! EEKS!!! We only get ours in the kitchen during the spring, it was 0 deg. C at night today. Thank goodness ours traveled over to you. Much warmer for them LOL. Once I put some cinnamon in the corner I read where they were come from and good they were gone....in two days they found another spot. :-(
Too bad about your cake and cookies.....when I lived in NYC if you didn't put your food in the fridge overnight the Cockroaches would actually move it someplace else on the counter UGH!
    Enjoy your day
